Area Police
Approximately 50 cars have been covered with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a statement.
Officers say they were notified late on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then found numerous other smeared automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement state preliminary tests show the fluid was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; authorities are currently not aware of any injuries in association with the occurrence," they stated.
City officials announced they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the community for tips.
A high-ranking representative stated the incident made him without words and needed to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at people of migrant background in five years prior.
